Improving SEO Performance For An Online Education Platform

The Project

Open Study College approached us looking to improve their SEO performance primarily through driving high quality Digital PR links to the website, combined with on-site content optimisation. The brand already ranked well for a number of key terms and were looking to improve/maintain performance through a combination of innovative and defensive SEO.

Over the initial 12 months working with Open Study College we were able to improve the overall depth and relevancy of the link profile, leading to continued strong performance across SEO for key product ranges.

Our Approach

Our approach for Open Study College started initially with providing SEO support for a website migration – as the brand was looking to move to a new platform and already had several strong ranking positions, it was key that SEO performance was maintained. In the initial stages we undertook a full review of the website and guided the brand through the migration to ensure that rankings remained strong and that minimal traffic was lost throughout the process.

Once the migration had settled we worked on a combined approach of improving and optimising on-site content mixed with creating relevant, high quality Digital PR links to boost the overall authority of the website while also ensuring that the course content remained an intent match for users. In particular, within the sector we identified that the intent match had shifted over time away from users looking for “online” courses specifically to a broader range of course options so it was key that we updated the on-site content accordingly. We rolled this strategy out by undertaking an “Opportunity Analysis” to identify where the biggest gains could be made based on cross-referencing search volumes with keyword difficulty.

Digital PR & Link Acquisition

From a Digital PR perspective, our approach focused on utilising a mixture of data-led campaigns combined with reactive newsjacking to jump on topical trends that were relevant either to education as a whole or to specific courses that the brand offered.

Topics that we covered here included data-led campaigns to uncover the UK’s favourite dog breed, counselling hotspots and what not to get your teacher for Christmas, in addition to thought leadership pieces including how to keep your dog warm in winter, bookkeeping vs accounting and pet fines that you didn’t know about.

As a result of our initial 12-month campaign we were able to heavily strengthen the overall link profile helping to build authority and trust for the brand.
