Rules & Regulations Of Home CCTV Cameras
The Project
As part of our SEO campaign with Gaffsy, improving the overall link profile both in terms of relevancy and quality played an important role and we found the best way to do this was through relevant thought leadership and newsjacking around topical trends and themes.
During one of our weekly Reactive Newsrooms, we identified that home CCTV cameras were becoming a hot topic of discussion in the press, specifically the rules around what could and couldn’t be done and where it could get you into hot water – but we found that there wasn’t a clear article with a human interest hook that actually explained it in detail – so we decided to jump on it as a reactive newsjacking piece.
Our Approach
Our initial approach to this involved undertaking research to understand what the rules and regulations were around the use of CCTV at home, in addition to discussing with the property experts at Gaffsy as to how this could potentially create an issue and how users could protect themselves from it.
From our research we uncovered that users of the popular “Ring” doorbell could fall victim to little-known rules resulting in fines up to £100,000 – a huge human interest point and also quite topical among cost of living, in particular if CCTV that you use in and around your home happens to catch footage from outside of your property boundary, including a neighbour’s garden or home or a shared/public space.
In particular, ensuring that the data and time is correct is important to comply with GDPR and also to check that the recorded information is used for the purpose of which the system was installed – something that many users may not be aware of – in addition to understanding the rules and regulations if the footage needs to be deleted or to comply with GDPR regulations.
Our Coverage
