What Is An SEO Agency?

Content Reviewed & Fact Checked By Amanda Walls, Director

Content Updated: 29/09/2023

An SEO agency is an agency who provides search engine optimisation work with the aim of helping clients improve their online visibility, rankings and of course leads!

SEO agencies draw on years of expertise to pull together effective strategies for clients who are looking to improve their online marketing and improve their audience visibility in often competitive markets. Agencies will often have a range of skills from technical SEO and on-site optimisation through to Digital PR and content which all complement each other nicely to drive a well-rounded SEO campaign.

Working with an SEO agency can help to take your digital marketing to the next level, but it’s important when choosing an agency to look for a proven track record, case studies and client testimonials – these will help to reassure that the agency you are choosing is the right one for you!

SEO is a long term investment and you won’t see results overnight, but it’s an investment in visibility and growth over a period of time, so if you are looking to grow sustainably and drive some great visibility for your business at the same time then it’s a great choice!

Why Do I Need An SEO Agency?

SEO is a team effort so ensure that when you work with an agency you can give them as much support as they can give you – after all, you know your audience better than anyone! SEO Agency FAQs

Content Reviewed & Fact Checked By Amanda Walls, Director

Content Updated: 20/09/2023

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the process of working with a website to increase the visibility & positioning of key terms within the search engine results. This could be on Google (which currently has roughly 92% of the market share) or on smaller search engines such as Bing. This traffic is often referred to as “organic” because it has come through to your website “naturally” through results pages, rather than through other channels.

With over 8.5 billion searches processed by Google each day, strong SEO performance can make a marked difference on a businesses’ ability to drive leads & sales – so by working to optimise your website & making sure that your pages offer what the user is searching for, businesses can capitalise on free, targeted traffic.

Although there is no exact science to SEO, Google frequently publishes & updates its “Quality Rater Guidelines” which outline what it looks for when choosing which websites to return in the search results – as such most companies can use these as guidelines to understand what Google deems to be a “quality website” & therefore what action they may need to undertake to improve that website’s SEO.

SEO utilises a range of techniques including on and offsite optimisation to help build the reputation, visibility and authority of a brand online, helping Google to recognise what the website is about & rank it accordingly.

Location isn’t necessarily that important for an SEO agency unless you are looking for someone that is close to home, but of course if you are based in the local area then choosing someone close by for more regular meetings is a great way to start.

As an SEO agency we work with clients right around the UK, Europe and even the world. We know what works in different markets and have experience working with businesses who sell products and services right around the world – so if you are looking for an SEO agency which is experienced in multiple markets then here at Cedarwood we have the experience that you need to take your performance to the next level.

Effective SEO  doesn’t just drive additional leads & sales to your website (although this is great!) – it also helps to create a real buzz & trust around your brand. With over 8.5 billion people searching on Google each day there’s a lot of people just waiting to have your brand put in front of them, effective SEO is a great way to build brand awareness & put your website in front of an audience with high intent – at a time when they are actively searching for your product.

In addition to the visibility, many of our SEO techniques including Digital PR do a great job of promoting overall brand awareness & getting you in front of the right audience by landing solid links across key publications. They can also drive referral sales & leads through your website by promoting your brand to the audience at the right time – driving free traffic/sales/leads through to your website while also helping to boost the authority & enhance the website’s overall SEO!

Choosing Cedarwood Digital as your Manchester SEO agency is a smart choice for your business. Contact us today to learn more about what we can do for you.

SEO agencies can vary on price depending on the amount of work that they need to undertake and the deliverables in question. At Cedarwood we don’t undertake any SEO retainers for less than £3,000p/m, that’s because we want to ensure we have enough time to make a real impact on your website. There’s no point paying £500 a month for SEO which takes five years to get you to where you want to be. When considering budget, listen to the agency’s reasons for charging a price to understand what they are looking to deliver and in what timeframe.

We get asked quite a lot about whether SEO is the right approach for businesses and the simple answer is – it depends. It depends on what your goals are, your budget, what you are looking to achieve and what you want to get out of it – there’s no one size fits all and as a result we always have an in-depth call with potential clients to find out what their goals are before recommending any type of marketing to them at all.

As a business we want to share in your success, so if we think that SEO isn’t the right channel for you, or that it won’t work then quite simply we won’t recommend it as your time and our time would be better spent elsewhere.

There’s no easy answer to this question as it can depend on a lot of factors – are you currently in a penalty? Has previous SEO work been done? How does Google currently view your website? How is your external link profile? Does a lot of content need to be updated? Can Google effectively crawl your website? All of these questions need to be asked (and answered!) before we can put any timescales on SEO & if it’s an algorithmic consideration then you may need to wait until the next core algorithm update regardless of how much work you undertake.

In general, we say to clients that it can take roughly 3-6 months to start seeing the impact of SEO optimisation but this can be longer depending on your situation.

Featured Snippets are Google search engine results that appear as a paragraph of text at the top of the results page. Because the fall in “position 0” above the usual search results they take up a larger portion of the page – although as they fall in this unique position data shows that they frequently get a slightly lower CTR than that of the main position one.

Featured snippets are a great way to pursue strong rankings for content pieces & also key service pages – the approach is slightly different to that of traditional SEO & incorporates more list style content & effective use of Schema. To find out more about featured snippets & how to secure one check out our handy blog

There’s a whole host of reasons that your organic traffic might have dropped ranging from an algorithmic penalty, through to a technical issue, through to a loss of authority. Regardless of the reason, diagnosing the drop & then taking effective steps to rectify it is key to SEO success.

Organic traffic drops can be diagnosed with a range of tools ranging from common industry insights tools such as AHREFs, SEMRush & Majestic SEO through to website data tools such as Google Analytics. By combining this data along with your data in Google Search Console we can identify keywords which are no longer driving traffic through to the website & analyse why this might be, creating a strategy that allows you to not only recover but also capitalise on new traffic.

Site speed is an important element of SEO as it’s a contributing factor in the overall user experience matrix – as such it relates directly to both Google’s Core Web Vitals update which looks at key elements of speed including page load time & shift & the Page Experience update which looks at how users are able to interact with a page – essentially their overall experience.

Measuring site speed is an important part of any SEO audit & there’s a range of tools that we can use for this ranging from Google’s own PageSpeed tool, through to Lighthouse, through to external tools such as GT Metrix which allow for a waterfall analysis – essentially identifying areas & elements which are causing a hold up within the load time & identifying how we can improve these. Using these tools together to produce an overall speed report is a great way to help improve the performance of the website & identify the quick wins first to balance impact vs resource/cost.

Word count shouldn’t be an important factor in SEO content – rather the most important elements lie in the expertise & trust that is portrayed through the content & also the value to the user – so when creating content for the website we need to keep the user in mind & Google as a secondary thought.

Rather than focusing on a word count, focusing on signposting is a great way to ensure that Google understands your content & that it trusts you as an expert on the subject matter. Signposting can be done through a number of ways including implementation of key page headings, title tags & also descriptions as well as a strong internal navigation structure that allows Google to understand how your pages are semantically themed. This will allow Google to understand where & how it should rank your content.

When it comes to your business, there are a lot of different factors that go into whether or not you’ll be successful. One of those factors is your marketing strategy – and more specifically, how you choose to execute your SEO. You can either try to do it yourself, or you can partner with an agency that specializes in this area.

There are benefits to both approaches, but we think there are some clear advantages to working with an agency over going the in-house route. Here’s a look at some of the key reasons why:

1. More Experience & Expertise

When you work with an agency, you’re tapping into a team of experts who have extensive experience in the SEO space. They know what works and what doesn’t, and they can help you avoid common pitfalls.

2. Increased Flexibility

An agency has the ability to be far more flexible than an in-house team. If you need to scale up or down your SEO efforts quickly, an agency can make that happen.

An agency has the ability to be nimble and adjust your strategy on the fly if needed. If something isn’t working or a new opportunity arises, they can quickly pivot and take advantage of it. This is much harder to do when you have an in-house team that is locked into a specific way of doing things.

3. Save Time & Money

Building out an in-house SEO team takes time – you have to find the right people, train them up, and then keep them on staff long-term. It can be a significant investment, both in terms of money and resources. With an agency, you can get started much faster and without all the hassle.

It takes time and money to build out a strong in-house SEO team. You need to recruit, train, and retain top talent, which can be costly. working with an agency can help you save both time and money.

At the end of the day, it’s up to you to decide what’s best for your business. But if you’re looking for our opinion, we think partnering with an agency is the way to go.

It takes a lot of time and money to build out a strong in-house SEO team. You have to recruit talent, train them, and keep them on staff – which can be a full-time job in itself. By working with an agency, you can avoid all of that hassle.

There’s no doubt that digital PR plays a very important role in SEO. Not only does it help get your brand out there, but it also drives those valuable high quality links back into your website.

When it comes to links, quality is definitely more important than quantity & this is key to tie this back to those key metrics of Expertise, Authority & Trust.

Driving great quality links back into your website is definitely one of the most important things you can do for your SEO. Luckily, we have a strong track record of delivering this across the board. So if you’re looking to improve your SEO and get those high quality links, digital PR is definitely something you should be considering.

Recovery from an SEO penalty is all dependant on what the penalty is & what needs to be done to help the website recover from it. Website penalties now are a lot more sophisticated & if you feel that your website is being held back by Google then it’s likely that Google deems the website to not fully adhere to it’s quality rater guidelines, or that it doesn’t feel your Expertise-Authority-Trust signals are strong enough.

Recovery is built around diagnosing the problem & then  building a strategy to recover, once we have identified what we feel is holding the website back we can start to correct this & send signals to Google which extol the virtues that they push within their Quality Rater Guidelines, it can take time for Google to take these signals into account, if they choose to at all so sadly how long it takes to recover is very much in their hands!

Developed by Google’s founders Larry Page & Sergey Brin at Stanford University, PageRank is essentially Google’s way of ranking a web page. Developed on a logarithmic scale from 0-10 SEO’s used to be able to use Google’s PageRank toolbar to understand the “rank” of a given page which used to be particularly valuable when trying to identify high “authority” pages or pages where they wanted to gain a link.

Fast forward to today & PageRank is no longer a visible metric making it harder for SEO’s to use it effectively. As a result, many have turned to other tools such as AHREF’s Domain Rank or Majestic’s TrustFlow to understand how Google may view their website – both offering valuable insight in to the performance of any given website, allowing SEO’s to draw effective competitor analysis & identify key gaps or areas within the market on specific keyword targets.

Ah, that old chestnut. Barry may well be able to get you to page one for a search term – but what is he targeting? There’s no point ranking #1 for “buy mouldy potatoes online” if A) you don’t sell mouldy potatoes & B) no one is searching to buy mouldy potatoes because, well, they’re mouldy. SEO takes time & dedication to see results, but when you get there it’s worth it.
